ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we saw how North America and Britain are both ‘talking the talk’ of a more sustainable urbanism that plans to bring people closer together in stimulating and attractive, transit-orientated places surrounded by beautiful, diverse and vital countryside. In the preceding chapter, Peter Hall has shown that while people on both sides of the Atlantic may be ‘walking the walk’ at different speeds-not least because Britain has less space-we share an immediate need for smarter forms of growth.
