ABSTRACT

Urban planning at the end of the twentieth century has been marked by an urgent need to find solutions to the key problems facing our towns and cities-the control of sprawl, sustainable growth, more integrated transport and betterquality urban environments. In both the UK and the USA, there are parallel debates about proposals for new-and sometimes not so new-patterns of smarter and more efficient growth. They provide an essential context for the role of mixed-use urban villages and new approaches to traditional urbanism.
