ABSTRACT

The Encyclopaedia Britannica (https://www.britannica.com) defines copyright as ‘the exclusive, legally secured right to publish, reproduce, and sell the matter and form of a literary, musical, dramatic, or artistic work’. In the United Kingdom, copyright is primarily seen as a property right. Indeed, section 1 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 begins with the words ‘Copyright is a property right…’ Copyright entitles the copyright owner to five main economic rights:

• copying the work • issuing copies of it to the public • performing it or playing it to the public • broadcasting it or including it in a cable progamme • adapting it.
