Cognitive development involves progressive changes in children’s perceptions, knowledge, understanding, reasoning and judgement. Another important aspect of cognitive development-which is sometimes overlooked-is the application of cognitive competencies to daily life experiences. Such application enables the individual to become gradually more independent in dealing with a broad range of environmental demands and challenges (Dunst et al., 1996). Efforts to promote cognitive development, then, should focus not only on the acquisition of knowledge and understanding, but applying such knowledge and understanding to daily living situations as well.
