Identifying children with special needs is often a complex and multifaceted task. The challenge is even greater at the early childhood level, in that many of the screening and assessment tools and procedures used with older children are not appropriate when working with young children. This chapter gives an overview of the different aspects of assessment and a discussion of the special challenges involved in assessing young children. Presented first, however, is a clarification of the reasons for conducting different types of assessment.
