POSTMODERN SCIENCE AND ECOCENTRISM science
All radical environmentalists should think about the nature and role of science in society. For, as we have noted, science constitutes a principal component of the ‘cultural filter’ through which Western society views nature and environment. Many people tend to regard science as the most ‘respectable’ way to know nature: to show irrational or emotive attitudes towards an environmental issue runs the risk of not being taken seriously. By contrast, people often see science as the source of absolute, monolithic ‘truth’ about the environment: the route to the objective ‘facts’ on which we can base decisions.
