Acceleration was tested using a stationary 10-m test and maximum speed was assessed using a flying 30-m test, both of which had been used previously for their respective measures (Mero et al., 1981; Wilson et al., 1993; Faccioni, 1994). ‘Stationary 10 m’ involved sprinting 10 m as fast as possible from a stationary start position. ‘Flying 30 m’ involved sprinting 30 m as fast as possible from a maximum speed start. All tests were performed on an indoor synthetic pitch and electronic timing gates were used to record completion times (Brower Timing System, Salt Lake City, UT). Subjects performed two maximal attempts at each exercise with at least 2 min rest between tests and trials. The best times were used for analysis.
