contact. GB strategy—goalkeepers dive before kicker-ball contact A noticeable increase in adopting the GA strategy is evident in the World Cup 2002. Club Matches 2000–2002 and relative to Club Matches reported by Kuhn (1988).

Overall, we confirm Kuhn’s report that late-diving GA goalkeepers were more likely to save penalties than early diving GB goalkeepers (GA: 36% (10/29) saves vs. GB: 11% (5/46); x2=6.2; df=1; P=0.013). The difference, however, (Figure 4) is less than that reported by Kuhn. This is consistent with higher ball speeds, which leave less time for the goalkeepers to reach the ball especially when they dive late.
