From field notes to dissertation: analyzing the stepfamily
These questions suggest starting-points for an analysis of the stepfamily. Indeed, they appear on the first page of my published work on stepparenting for that very reason (see Hughes 1991a). However, these questions did not form starting-points to my research as central issues to be explored. Rather they were raised only at the end of the fieldwork period when I began to grapple, in a formal way, with making sense of my data. Their life in print therefore portrays something of a misrepresentation of the process of analyzing field data.
