ABSTRACT

A notebook is a storeroom for ideas. It is also a laboratory for experimentation and a retreat for reflection. On the title page of this chapter there is a page from one of my sketchbooks, looking at examples of ‘temples’ in architecture (see the chapter on Temples and Cottages). Above is another page, analysing the Wheels of Heaven’ chapel by Aldo van Eyck. Through such analyses one acquires a deeper appreciation of the possibilities of architecture.
