The management of external relations has become a central challenge for those working in schools and colleges. At senior level governors and headteachers are recognizing that the long-term wellbeing of their school or college and its ability to deliver effectively the ‘whole education’ that is its principal raison d’être depend on addressing the issues of the school’s relationship with its outside audiences. Issues relating to marketing and image are to be found on the agendas of governors’ meetings and senior management team (SMT) meetings with a frequency that would have been unthinkable two decades ago.
