Each UK university is required by the relevant funding council to produce a learning, teaching and assessment strategy. As part of this, the University of Northumbria established a ‘Recognizing and Rewarding Teaching’ Task Group. The task group consisted of learning, teaching and assessment coordinators from each faculty and members of the University Quality Enhancement Unit. The Task Force had a loose brief, ‘to recommend criteria for recognizing and rewarding teaching, paying due attention to the HR implications and the representation of the student voice’, and a small budget.
