Napier is a mainly vocational university that has largely succeeded in its aim to recruit students from previously underrepresented groups. In 1994, the university realized that it knew and understood too little about how students were doing after they enrolled, about the links between student retention and the financial and reputational health of the institution, and about the activities required to keep students on course and succeeding in their studies.
