The fact that football has been my major area of research for more than 30 years has led me to have considerable experience with the media. I do not attribute this experience to anything other than my choice of subject, particularly the media prominence given to football hooliganism in the 1980s. It certainly has not come about as a result of any ‘star quality’ on my part. Nevertheless, since my experience has been fairly extensive-with newspapers as well as radio and television-it strikes me that the following reminiscences and preliminary reflections may be of interest to some of my fellow social scientists and-who knows?—perhaps to some media people as well.
