Drama in education and TIE: a comparison

I have never worked professionally in TIE, but since its inception I have found myself caught up in its development. Both DIE and TIE are concerned with dramatic art and pedagogy, but in recent years political and economic expediency have had a reductive effect: some drama teaching has become reduced to a particularly limited form of simulated role-play related to the learning of facts and practising of skills; some TIE has become reduced to performing for large audiences, followed, perhaps, by brief ‘hot-seating’ procedures as a means of reflection.
