As I begin this chapter, I am also engaged in writing my eighteenth TIE play for the Creative Arts Team (CAT), the professional Theatre in Education company in residence at New York University. Thus, my thoughts and statements regarding the process of TIE playwriting will be reflective of the many styles and techniques that have influenced my work since 1974. I shall attempt here to outline what are, in my estimation, the general principles as well as the specifics that I have found helpful in the crafting of the TIE play. Several of the plays in CAT’s repertoire will be used as paradigms of these principles. Finally, it is both an honour and an irony to be contributing to this new edition of Learning Through Theatre, because the authors of that first edition were all influential in my development as a TIE writer.
