ABSTRACT

The Creative Arts Team (CAT), the professional educational theatre company at New York University’s Gallatin Division, has been innovative in the uses of theatre for educational purposes in the United States for the past eighteen years. By presenting original theatre performances and participatory drama workshops, CAT aims to motivate urban youth to examine pertinent curricular themes and social issues, including race relations, HIV/AIDS, child abuse, teen pregnancy, violence, multiculturalism and the environment. CAT currently comprises nearly fifty full-time employees, including actor-teachers, workshop directors and arts administrators, serving, through four programmes, approximately 35,000 young people annually in the five boroughs of New York City.
