In essence, TIE needs to be seen as a new form of theatre. It began, to all intents and purposes, in 1965 at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, where a number of pilot projects in schools demonstrated vividly the value of theatre as an educational method and led to the setting up of a full-time TIE unit backed by money from the Belgrade Theatre and the local authority. A pattern was set that soon spread to theatres across the country. The personnel of these companies are usually known as ‘actorteachers’ precisely because they seek to combine the qualities, skills and objectives of both actors and teachers (although, as Cora Williams explains later, that term has recently been challenged).
