ABSTRACT

It is always easy to criticise policy. Science education has changed considerably in the last few years and is still changing. Much of this change has been as a result of policies made at different levels-not just at national level, but at authority and school level too. And, in my view, change has been for the better: for example, we are moving slowly to a stage of much more scientific literacy for many more people. There have been some lapses, and the active promotion of multicultural and antiracist science is one of them. Policy in science education has been sharply and roundly criticised on these grounds, for instance, by Gill and Levidow (1987) amongst many others.
