ABSTRACT

The system of education operated in Kenya since 1963 is based on the three-tier model developed during the latter part of the colonial period, which in turn was influenced by the system of education in Britain. The administration and policy control of education in Kenya rests with the Minister for Education who is charged with the responsibility for promoting education of the people of Kenya. Education is therefore highly centralised, with a common curriculum, based on the ‘centre-periphery’ model and common national examinations at the end of each phase of the three-tier system.
