In this, the third and final chapter of the opening section, the discussion of quality is developed one stage further-i.e. specifically in relation to education. A central purpose is to locate activity in CPE within the context of developments at other points of postcompulsory education. To this end, research evidence and emerging structural trends are highlighted. A further purpose is to identify and discuss some of the potentially most useful work which has developed within this context. At times these concerns are connected; at different times, one takes precedence over the other. In either case, the chapter will build on (and at some points relate to) earlier discussions in the book with the aim of establishing a wider basis of knowledge from which to proceed.
