Critical discourse analysis is a rapidly developing branch of linguistics which aims at revealing the implicit social, political and ideological mechanisms at work in spoken or written texts. Such mechanisms are implicit or hidden because people are not generally conscious of the causes and consequences of the ideologically loaded language they are using. They have lost this consciousness through a process of inculcation. By being persistently exposed to politically and socially dominant norms and values in numerous written and spoken texts, in the mass media, in books, etc., but also in their everyday conversations, people have been induced to naturalize their beliefs, to see them as normal, even to the extent of treating them as matters of mere common sense.
