ABSTRACT

Autogenic drainage (AD) combines the technique of breathing control with breaths taken at various lung volumes. Airflow is maximized, in order to improve mucus clearance and ventilation. The three key phases are: (1) ‘unstick’ (breathing at low lung volume-active secretion mobilization); (2) ‘collect’ (breathing around tidal volume); and (3) ‘evacuate’ (breathing at high lung volume-active expectoration of secretions).
