ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters of this book we have attempted to give you a sense of what is involved in a problem-based learning course, the major issues that arise and some guide to design, development, evaluation and implementation. In the process we hope we have conveyed some of our enthusiasm for the process and given an indication of the type of benefits students gain from such an approach. In this chapter we will review the earlier parts of the book briefly, and extract some general messages. We will outline the advances that we feel our experience brings to the field and make some comments about where problem-based learning might develop next. Finally, from our experience, we will give our views on the necessary conditions for mounting a successful problem-based course.
