AFGHANISTAN (25 million). Pashto is the language of the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan, the Pashtuns, who number about 15 million. Most of the rest of the population, about 8 million people, speak Persian, known here as Dari. In the far north there are about 2 million speakers of Uzbek and 500,000 speakers of Turkmen. In the south about 250,000 people speak Baluchi.
