ABSTRACT

Ecclesiastes On the subject of war much of the Hebrew Bible breathes the same atmosphere as that expressed in the opening lines of the Iliad:

(Lattimore 1961, 59; cf. Murray 1924, 2) The corpses pile up, humans are put to shame, and the will of the god is brought to its desired conclusion. This Homeric description of war reflects a point of view that would hold good for many of the biblical narratives about war and fighting.
