ABSTRACT

Iris Moore with her multi-layered texts, and Lawrence Steger with his eerie dramatic persona, have carved out reputations as consistently provocative performance artists. Rough Trade is genuinely transgressive, exploring gender roles and, more specifically, sexual preference and identification. Combining lip-synching, appropriation of popular culture, danger and constant subtle shifts in meaning, Rough Trade plays on stereotypes to create a haunting yet humorous and surreal world.
