ABSTRACT

President of the Panamerican Conference held in Buenos Aires in 1936, Saavedra played an out­ standing role in the peace conference which ended the war between Bolivia and Paraguay (1932-5) over the oil and timber-rich region of the Gran Chaco. In 1936 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (see Nobel Prizes). He taught at several universities in Argentina and occupied a number of important posts, among them Minister of Justice and of Education and Foreign Secretary between 1932 and 1938.
