chapter  4
THE ORGANISATION OF NARRATIVES OF DESIRE
A study of first-person erotic fantasies
ByMichael Hoey
Pages 21

Because we live in a highly sexualised society, most of our fiction contains episodes that describe the sexual behaviour of its characters. Certain classes of fiction have achieved partial acceptance that have as their sole reason of existence the depiction of such behaviour, whether for erotic or romantic reasons; these include so-called top-shelf magazines such as Mayfair or Men Only and novel series such as those published by Mills & Boon. In this chapter, I report a preliminary investigation into the patterns of organisation of first-person narratives of desire and the way these patterns illuminate the construction and conception of sexual desire.
