The aim of this chapter is to show how metaphor plays a part in creating and reinforcing stereotypical images of sexual desire in its different manifestations. I shall argue in this introduction that speakers can use metaphor to express value judgements implicitly and without rational justification. These may be value judgements which many people would find unacceptable if stated in non-metaphorical language, or judgements which at the very least would require discussion. In the rest of the chapter I shall discuss examples of metaphors which are used to talk about sexual desire, exploring the attitudes towards desire and its manifestations which appear to be tacitly encoded in them.
