ABSTRACT

When night came, the lady took him by the hand, and leading him into her chamber, said, 'It seems to be time to go to bed.' 'Madam,' said Giannetto, 'I am at your service.' And immediately two damsels entered, one with wine, the other with sweetmeats. The lady said, 'I am sure that you are thirsty; please drink.' Giannetto took some sweetmeats and drank some of the wine, which was drugged to make him sleep. Unaware of this he drank half the cup, for he found it excellent. He undressed at once and got into bed; and as soon as his head touched the pillow, he fell asleep. The lady lay down by his side, but he never woke till past nine in the morning. She however rose with the sun and gave orders to unload the vessel, which she found full of fine and costly merchandise.
