From the very earliest times man has used his intelligence to produce weapons with which to kill both his animal prey and his human enemies. In Darwinian terms this has been the basis of his evolutionary advantage and the intelligence of Homo sapiens can be seen as the final outcome of this process. Survival of the fittest has proved an effective if harsh mechanism.
