ABSTRACT

If these figures were even approximately correct, or if they really had the significance with which Helfferich himself and his parrots in all countries seem to want to invest them, one would be almost inescapably bound to concur with the view that it can only have been on account of the vile plots of envious enemies that Germany was drawn into the war; for it seems completely inconceivable that it would have traded so brilliant a course of peaceful expansion for the ‘arduous toil and meagre rewards’ of an international brawl, of its own free will.
