ABSTRACT
Within this chapter the organizations and legislation relevant to public transport in the British Isles are outlined. The situation described is that applying from spring 2001. The overall framework is that provided under the European Union – influencing, for example, the structures for railway finances, and safety regulation – as discussed further in Chapter 11. Detailed coverage is given of the structure in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and within the Irish Republic.
