Between the 1960s and the 1970s, reggae and its embryonic forms, ska and rock steady, took root in diverse and distant locations. The British culture industry provided the first point of departure for these musical styles since Jamaica was an English colony until 1962. On the other hand, the electronic atmosphere that characterizes contemporary culture obeys neither national-geographic nor social-generational patterns.
