ABSTRACT
Children need to make plenty of use of physical objects such as stacking cubes to represent counts, before they move to direct recording using tables and charts on paper. They need to experience the full range of modes of representation:
• Tally marks can be used against a picture or a label ( jam sandwich, packet of crisps) to show how many children like each type of food.
