ABSTRACT

When this is working well, get the children to close their eyes and repeat the activity. After plenty of practice, finally try it with eyes closed and no hand-holding: this is totally aural, and you can get the children to begin to put their focus on all the sounds they hear, rather than just listening out for when it’s their turn. This helps them learn to listen to counts up to 99, and of course the children can be given plenty of opportunity to count back. With older children, various counting chants can be tried, using software such as ATM Counter.
