In the well-appointed drawing-room of a Victorian villa situated high above the Clyde Estuary sit seven women - the mother, the grandmother, the aunt, three great-aunts and the girl. The girl is stretched out on the window-seat, apart from the others, reading. She is oblivious to the much-praised view below and to the murmur of adult conversation behind. Suddenly, a sentence from one of the old women pierces the peaceful twilight: 'Ah, yes, the Devil is beautiful.'
