In Italy as elsewhere peasant society, following its decline and disappearance, has been retrospectively romanticized not only popularly, but also by many historians and anthropologists.1 One particularly widespread view is that peasants lived in a symbiotic mutually harmonious relationship with the natural world, not only depending on the fruitfulness of nature but caring for it and conserving it.
