ABSTRACT

According to 1991 Australian Bureau of Statistics census data, females born in non-English speaking countries comprised nearly 15 per cent of Australia’s population. However, as a group they are significantly under-represented in national sport participation figures (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1994) and virtually invisible in the literature on sport in Australia (Taylor and Toohey, 1995). By listening to the voices of women from Chinese, Croatian, Greek, Italian, Lebanese, Serbian and Vietnamese backgrounds in the research project reported here, we aimed to delve into the nexus of women, ethnicity and sport.
