Sport in the city

Where do we go from here?
ByChris Gratton, Ian Henry

In the introduction to this book, we argued that there were strong theoretical arguments supporting the case that sport had an important role in the city both economically, in terms of being an industry around which cities could devise urban regeneration strategies and socially, through using sport for the development of urban communities, reducing social exclusion and through using sport to bring about a reduction in urban crime. Most of the chapters in this book have attempted to improve the evidence either in support of this theory or to critically challenge some aspect of the theory. This final chapter attempts to evaluate the role of sport in economic and social regeneration in the city.
