Supporting pupils with special health needs in mainstream schools

In this chapter we use data from research and development work we have undertaken between 1996 and 2000 to reflect on the position of pupils with special health needs within relevant policy guidance for supporting children in mainstream schools. By ‘special health needs’ we mean needs arising from a chronic illness or physical disability. The discussion identifies areas where policy guidance might be strengthened to provide better support for these pupils.
