Theprecedingchaptershave,fromavarietyofperspectives, illustratedthecomplexinteractionbetweeneconomicreformand socialchangeinChina.Theyhaveshownthateconomicgrowth overthepasttenyearshastransformedthebehaviourofindividuals andgroupsand,thereby,ledtodemandsforfurtherchangesin socialinstitutionsandpoliticalrelationships.Theyhavealso demonstratedthatiffurtherinstitutionalandpoliticalchangeisnot forthcoming,thenatureofChina'seconomicdevelopmentwillbe increasinglyconstrained.Stressesandtensionswillcontinueto grow,andtheimpactofthosetensionswilltugtheeconomyin directionswhichwillaffectthespeedandtypeofgrowth.
