chapter  1
Are there philosophical issues with respect to sport (other than ethical ones)?

This chapter was written to address a practical puzzle I find in, for instance, course planning: how to conceptualize (and hence construct) a course on sport with a philosophical underpinning. But it was written from the conviction-which I do no more than flag here-that a satisfactory resolution would require a clearer view of the philosophical enterprise than I (for one) have. So I have boldly included some claims about the nature of the philosophy which, if they provoke debate, may help to clarify this question, even if not solving it.
