In 1974 the England football team failed to qualify for the World Cup Finals. It ended the careers of two of the remaining members of the successful 1966 team, the captain Bobby Moore and manager Sir Alf Ramsey. It was a national disaster. It was the beginning of the end for England as a leading force in World soccer; no longer the leaders in their own National gamethe game they had invented, nurtured and spread throughout the world.
