ABSTRACT

Glass fragments can provide very significant forensic evidence. Glass as a mass-produced material is widely distributed and fragments from broken glass can provide very strong evidence to support a scenario in a specific set of case circumstances. In general, the more parameters identified for the glass fragments, the stronger the evidence provided by that glass. The prime methods for characterising glass fragments and comparing them with a source of glass broken in the commission of a crime are based on microscopic techniques. These provide quick and effective exclusion of unlike fragments and information on matching fragments which can be used to assess the significance of the match.
