ABSTRACT

Many authors in this book have addressed the wildland-urban interface from perspectives unique to their experience and expertise. The purpose of this chapter is to explore forestland uses at the interface from the perspective of an industrial landowner. This task has some inherent risk in that industrial landowners are not alike, nor do they all share a common motive for owning land. With that acknowledgment, in this chapter we attempt to describe the situation of urban-forest interfaces from the perspective of a large forest products company. We begin with a brief review of land ownership and wood supply in the U.S. to set the context for the role of industrial forests. Then, we present some statistics about land-use changes, followed by a discussion of forest management implications at the interface. The chapter concludes with potential solutions to management of industrial forestland at the wildland-urban interface.
