ABSTRACT

Haematology is concerned with circulating blood and blood forming products. The three major functions of the haematopoietic system are the distribution of oxygen and nutrients to all cells of the body; protection of organism from invading microbes and regulation homeostasis. Many disorders manifested by abnormalities of the haematopoietic system are secondary to abnormalities of other organ systems. Two haematological disorders will be discussed in this chapter. Sickle cell anaemia and Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC); these are described below.
