ABSTRACT

While one can lay great emphasis on the responsibility of individual workers to ensure that their health, safety and welfare is maintained, one must never forget the responsibility that rests upon the employer to provide a safe working environment. This chapter looks at some of the factors that help to ensure that workers have a workplace that does not present a risk to their health, safety and welfare, and that does not impose undue stress on them. These factors must be considered with reference to the identification of priority areas of work for enforcement officers, as highlighted in Chapter 18.
