ABSTRACT
Although radon was first discovered by the German chemist Friedrich Ernst Dorn in 1901, relatively modest importance was given to it in the United Kingdom until 1984, when the tenth report of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution [1] recognized the serious threat posed to health from radon, and the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) published new principles [2] for limiting public exposure.
